Speaker - Tracy Garbutt
We were very fortunate to have Tracy Garbutt from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind join us to give us an insight into their Guide Dog Program which was launched in 2017. The dogs all come from Australia, normally Black & Yellow Labs or Golden Retrievers, and cost up to $50,000 per dog.

The training for these dogs are done in Ottawa, and depending on the nature and success on the training, they are placed into 3 programs:
1) Guide Dog - partners with a youth or adult with sight loss. The dog is trained to avoid obstacles, stopping at curbs and negotiates traffic to offer its handler independence.
2) Buddy Dog - partners with a child living at home with sight loss. The dog is well behaved and gives the child an opportunity to feed and care for it in preparation for transitioning to guide dog when he grows up.
3) Ambassador Dog - partners with a staff member to promote the program at community events to recruit volunteers or sponsorship.

Thank you Tracy for your most upbeat and interesting presentation, we have so many dog lovers in our club, judging from all the questions asked, this was truly the highlight of our evening.
